My Favorite Books to Read in the Winter

The temperature is dropping, the stores are having their sales, and Hallmark has started with their Christmas lineup already… which means it must be time for the holidays! Winter is my favorite time to read — it’s cold outside, the nights are long, and my blankets are so toasty. I’ve had a few people message me in the last couple of days asking for book recommendations, so I thought I’d round up a few of my favorite books to read in the winter!

If you like Hallmark movies…

Sarah Addison Allen might be for you! All of her books have a touch of magical realism, which makes you believe that magic can happen anywhere. Check out First Frost for a sweet winter story that still has some bite to it.

If the long nights make you want a dark thriller…

Stephan Chbosky (author of Perks of Being a Wallflower) released a long-awaited novel — except it couldn’t be further from Perks. Imaginary Friend is a horror/psychological thriller that will have you checking the dark corners of your room on a long night.

If you like your mysteries less thrilling…

There’s a whole genre of novels for you called “cozy mysteries“! These mysteries are puzzling but aren’t quite as likely to make your heart race and keep you up at night. Check out an old-school Agatha Christie like And Then There Was None, or cult-favorite The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.

If you want to tackle a doorstopper…

I find that good weather makes it difficult to commit to long books, but the winter is when I do my best reading, especially with those long books I’ve put off all year. I read Anna Karenina last year at this time, and I totally enjoyed it! If you’re looking for a newer release, check out Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries.

If you want to get lost in a new world…

I loved The Night Circus so, so much when I read it last year, and Erin Morgenstern just published her newest novel in November. This novel has all of the world building of The Night Circus, and you will certainly get lost in all the twists and turns of The Starless Sea.
